Big Bay System Selection Process

The following information is provided to help you in the selection of Big Bay Technologies consumer marine electronics. The information below will provide you with an idea of what is involved in selecting a marine pc based navigation system.

Big Bay manufactures computers and displays to optimize the running of navigation software in the marine environment. In addition to running navigation software you can use the pc to play DVDs (movies) and send and receive email at relatively minimal additional cost. All systems are powered from either 12 volt DC or 110 AC source.

The computers are designed and manufactured to hold up under the vibration and pounding that is inherent aboard both power and sailing vessels, design considerations applied to all our consumer marine electronics. Providing a shock mounted case and ruggedized internal components insures your system will be up and running when you need it most. The BookPC or TowerPC provide the platform for the package systems with the BookPC offering the best value. Notebook and MiniPC's are used when you either don't have the room for a BookPC or mobility is paramount.

All displays offer a bright picture that will allow clear viewing in high-glare conditions. Standard and glass-front displays have anti-glare coatings permitting the viewing inside even in low (morning & evening) sun angles. Indoor high bright displays have become popular because they are 3-4 times brighter and offer superior dimming adjustment. Indoor-Outdoor displays (10.4”, 12” & 15") are water-resistant and 4-6 times brighter than conventional LCD displays. Lastly, the 15" TV/PC display is a great selection for entertainment with built in TV tuner, PC, and multiple video inputs. Optional Sunbrella covers with clear vinyl windows provide additional protection against rouge spray or overnight dew. All come standard with either pedestal (RAM) or flush mounting, except on the 10.4" Standard display that can only be pedestal mounted. Dual or multiple stations are available with the addition of a video splitter and additional displays. RF (radio frequency) Keyboard Mouse combination units allow operation of single and multiple stations from a single mouse or keyboard that is not hard wired to the system. Most dual stations are for fly-bridge or sailboat cockpit solutions that are in addition to the main pilothouse or nav-station primary location. Full access to navigation is available in the outside location and manipulated with an on-display mouse control.

As you ponder the question as to whether this is a system for your boat, consider the following. All electronics systems are advancing with new features every year. Assume you make a purchase today of any system (ours or any black box system.) Now, let's assume several years have passed since your initial electronics investment and there are now a number of new bells and whistles available in new systems on the market. Your upgrade path with a pc-based system is to simply load the upgraded software into your system and its done for the cost of the software upgrade. If you had purchased a proprietary embedded system (black box), your upgrade path is it to take out the old system and replace with a new system. The cost of this route is not only in the new product but also the de-installation and reinstallation.
