Real Time Positioning

Real Time Positioning

Connect an industry-standard NMEA 0183 GPS receiver to your PC.

Transfer Waypoints

Offshore Navigator lets you print out waypoint lists if you want to hand-key waypoints into GPS receivers. You can also electronically transfer waypoints between your PC and popular GPS receivers.

Pocket PC Handhelds

Put all Digital ChartKit and Contour 3-D Chart data onto a Pocket PC handheld using Pocket Navigator software (sold separately).

GPS Units Compatible with Maptech's Offshore Navigator and Marine Navigator

There are two reasons to connect a GPS to your PC - Real-time position tracking on the PC screen and transferring information between the PC and GPS. Virtually any GPS unit can be used for real-time positioning, but transferring routes, waypoints, and tracks to and from a GPS requires special compatibility.

Real-time Position Tracking on the PC screen

The only requirement for real-time positioning is for the GPS to output industry standard NMEA 0183 (version 1.5, 2.0/2.1, or 2.3) data onto a serial connection (COM Port). Most GPS receivers sold today output NMEA 0183. These GPS units can be connected to your PC (or laptop) via a serial cable (sold by your GPS manufacturer) to display your current position on Offshore Navigator and Marine Navigator nautical charts.

Transferring Waypoint, Route and Track Information Between the PC and GPS

When it is inconvenient to take your computer/GPS combination out "in the field", simply take the handheld GPS unit by itself. Before your trip, plan your routes and waypoints using Offshore Navigator or Marine Navigator, then transfer them to the GPS via a serial cable (sold by your GPS manufacturer). When you're out with the GPS, mark new waypoints and tracks, then send them back to Offshore Navigator or Marine Navigator for display. Please note that there is no standard method of information transfer between GPS units. Therefore, each unit requires a specific "driver" to perform transfer of routes, waypoints, and tracks.

UNTESTED GARMIN UNITS: Cross-compatibility:
Garmin has a wide range of GPS models. Many of them have different shapes, sizes and colors but share similar internal software. Maptech has created a number of software drivers to support Garmin models. If your model isn't listed above, there's a good chance it works, but will require picking another model's driver. Often, a single driver will work with multiple Garmin units. Below is a "cross-compatibility" list of Garmin models, based solely on information from other customers. If you have additions or corrections for this list, we and your fellow users would appreciate hearing about them. Please call us at 888-839-5551 or email sales@maptech.com with additions or corrections. Also note that Maptech technical support may not be able to fully assist you with the hookup and use of these units.
